Learning Hub: Online Casino Gambling for Beginners
Four ideas decide whether the rest of this site makes sense. None of them is complicated, and all of them are regularly misused in casino marketing.
18+ Over 18s only. Gambling can be addictive: set deposit and time limits, and stop when it stops being fun. Credit cards cannot be used for gambling in Ireland. The free, confidential National Gambling Helpline is open 24 hours on 1800 936 725.
Casino play looks simple from the outside. You open an account, you pick a game, you press a button. Most of what decides whether a session stays affordable is settled before that first spin. It sits in a handful of ideas about odds, licences and bonus terms.
This page is the entry point to CasinoCraic’s learning section. It gathers the concepts that appear on every casino page and in every review we publish. If you read nothing else, read the four ideas below, then check how the Irish licensing picture changes what you should verify before you play. The links lead to longer guides when you need exact figures rather than the short version.

The four ideas worth understanding first
House edge is the share the casino keeps over a very long run of play. A game with a 2.5 percent house edge returns 97.5 percent of every euro staked, on average, across thousands of rounds. That single figure is the clearest measure of what a game costs to play before any bonus or promotion enters the picture.
Return to player, or RTP, is the same average seen from the player’s side. It does not describe any one session. A short run of twenty spins can land far above or far below that average. The figure is a planning tool rather than a prediction for your next deposit.
Short-run spread has its own name: variance. Two slots can share the same RTP, yet one pays frequent small wins and another goes quiet for long stretches before a larger line. Volatility is the term most slot pages use for the same idea. Checking the volatility before you play tells you whether your budget needs to survive long gaps.
Bonus conditions usually begin with wagering. Wagering requirements turn a bonus into a condition. The figure tells you how many times you must stake the bonus, and sometimes the deposit, before any bonus balance becomes withdrawable cash. A low headline requirement can still be expensive once game weighting and time limits are counted.
- House edge The casino’s share of every euro over many rounds.
- RTP The average returned to players over the long run.
- Variance The size and frequency of short-term swings.
- Wagering The multiple you must stake before withdrawing bonus funds.
How the Irish picture differs
The legal picture in Ireland changes what a player should check. Online casinos currently operate under overseas licences while the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, known as the GRAI, issues licences in phases. Remote betting and betting-intermediary licences started on 1 July 2026. Applications for gaming licences, the kind an online casino would need, open throughout 2027 and 2028.
The public register at grai.ie/register listed 40 licences on 6 October 2026. That total was 35 remote betting, 4 remote betting intermediary, 1 in-person betting, and no gaming licences at all. Every casino an Irish player can reach therefore runs on an overseas licence, usually from Malta or Gibraltar.
That split matters because a GRAI number next to a casino logo covers the sportsbook only. The Irish casino licence guide walks through the same check with a worked example. You open the overseas register, find the company named in the footer, and see which licence covers casino play.
Betting licence
A number on the GRAI register covers a sportsbook. It says nothing about casino games.
Casino licence
Irish casino licensing arrives in a later GRAI phase. Casino play currently sits under an overseas permit, often MGA or Gibraltar.
A GRAI number on an operator’s site covers its sportsbook only. It does not tell you that any casino game is licensed in Ireland.
One payment rule matters immediately. Credit cards cannot be used for gambling in Ireland since 5 February 2026, online or in person. Debit cards are unaffected. Licensees may not facilitate credit. A declined credit card can be a sign the rule is working.
The wider regulations in Ireland set the minimum age at 18 and put other duties on licensees, including paying out winnings and closing accounts on request.
- Remote betting licences 35 active on 6 October 2026.
- Gaming licences None issued as of that date.
- Credit cards Banned for gambling since 5 February 2026.
- Minimum age 18 for all gambling in the State.
Words that mean something specific
Online casino language is precise. The same word means one thing on a slot page and another in a bonus terms box. Some terms come from the regulators, others from the marketing team. These are the definitions that matter most on an Irish-facing site.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| RTP | Return to player, the average percentage of stakes a game returns over many rounds. |
| House edge | The casino’s average share, equal to 100 percent minus RTP. |
| Variance | How far a short session can swing from the long-run average. |
| Volatility | The slot industry’s word for variance, often labelled low, medium or high. |
| Wagering requirement | The multiple of bonus, and sometimes deposit, you must stake before withdrawing bonus funds. |
| Max cashout | A cap on how much you can withdraw from winnings generated by a bonus. |
| Game weighting | The percentage of each stake that counts toward clearing a wagering requirement. |
| KYC | Know your customer checks that verify identity, age and address. |
| Self-exclusion | An operator-level block you can request while the national register remains uncommenced. |
| Bonus balance | Funds you can use to play but cannot withdraw until conditions are met. |
| Cash balance | Deposited or cleared funds you can normally withdraw at any time. |
| Reality check | A pop-up that shows elapsed time and spend after a set interval. |
The distinction between bonus balance and cash balance causes the most confusion. It changes what the withdrawal button can actually do before and after wagering is complete.
Where people lose money without noticing
Three habits cost new players more than any single bad session. Chasing a loss, mixing up bonus and cash balances, and treating an average as a promise are all quiet ways to spend more than planned. Each one is avoidable with a couple of checks before the first spin.
Chasing happens when a losing streak starts to feel like a debt the game owes you. It does not work that way. Every round is independent, and the next spin has no reason to correct the previous one.
Bonus balance confusion is simpler. You can sometimes place a bet using bonus funds while your cash balance sits untouched. The two balances clear at different speeds and under different rules.
A 97 percent RTP is not a guarantee of €97 back from a €100 deposit. That average only appears over a very large number of rounds, across many players. A single session can lose the whole hundred.
- Check balances separately
Bonus money is not cash until wagering is complete and the operator confirms the balance conversion.
- Set a time limit
Reality checks and session limits exist in most licensed accounts, but you have to switch them on.
- Read the terms
Max cashout and game weighting decide whether a bonus can ever become withdrawable cash.
- Stop before chasing
Chasing a loss treats a random result as if it owes you something. It does not.
The next step is to set limits before a session starts. Responsible gambling tools are only useful when they are switched on.

The multiplier means nothing until you know what it is applied to. The same 25x can mean 1,250 euro of bets or 2,500.

Do I need to join the National Gambling Exclusion Register before I can self-exclude?
The register has not commenced, so self-exclusion today means telling each operator separately. You can ask a licensee to close your account under the rules already in force, and the GRAI site explains what exists and what is still to come.
Does a GRAI licence number next to a casino logo mean the games are licensed?
A GRAI number covers the operator’s sportsbook, not its casino. No gaming licences have been issued in Ireland, so you must check the overseas register named in the footer.
Can a game with a 97 percent RTP guarantee I get €97 back from a €100 deposit?
That figure describes many thousands of rounds across all players, not one session. A single deposit can lose far more or gain more in the short run.
Is a wagering requirement of 35x a figure I should expect?
It is a common figure, but the real cost depends on game weighting and time limits. A 35x requirement on slots is very different from 35x on blackjack when the game counts at 10 percent.
